Yeah I said it. Learn to be your own best friend. You’re going to spend a loooong long time with you. You better be a fun person or you’ll go crazy annoyed, and even worse, bored with yourself! So get to know yourself. What do you like to do? I mean you. Do you like to read, watch movies, paint, meditate, shop, throw hoops, go fishing, plant flowers, walk, rest, look at the ocean, write lists or do origami?
1 year ago, if you would’ve asked me what I liked to do, I would have said ”case studies”. That is complete BS. Sure, in school, or at an interview, I can enjoy doing that because it’s fun and challenging. But in my spare time it’s not case studies that is giving me adrenaline kicks and a sense of accomplishment. I didn’t realize that I’m way more happy when I actually can say that I have things that I love to do that is not directly related to my career.
If you were to ask me today, I’d say that I love to go to a cafe with a terrace, and talk to the waiters, sit there for hours and watch the forest around the cafe, or the view. I sit there reading with my phone on flight mode. Not listening to music. I eat pie or sallad or truffle fries or olives. I drink coffee or lemonade. My mind simply focusing on exactly whats going on around me. Not caring about my engineering assignments, work projects, dating, friends, expectations or whatever else that seems so important at times.
I’m simply enjoying right now, and it’s taken me months of practice. Still some times I simply can’t do it. My mind can’t find that calm place. Other days I sit there so long that I simply spend my day there.
I also love to go to the movies alone. And eat a nice meal with a nice view. And paint abstract expressionism. Dance. Walk. Paint my nails. Rest with some music. There’s actually a lot of things that I love doing! And I’m getting better at spending time on doing it. I’ve come to realize that it’s these things that I do alone that make up my personality and set the standard for my time with friends.
